The big Kia is getting some lovin' in Sweden

Kia Optima PHEV Surges in Hot Market

There were 1.928 units registered in Sweden last month, the best result in the last 21 months, up 21% over the same period last year, while pulling the EV Share to a record 4.8%. Will we see this market surpass 5% by year end? By how much?

Looking at September Best Sellers, if the leadership has no surprises, with the Volkswagen Passat GTE scoring 427 units (32% of all Passat sales), in Second Place the Kia Optima PHEV continues to improve its record, now at 311 units (69% of all Optima sales), its highest standing anywhere in the world. With the Station Wagon version now available in the Kia model, it seems the Passat GTE now has a direct competitor to run from.

The Mitsubishi closed the podium in Third, with 147 registrations, corresponding to 75% of all Outlander sales. With the plug-in share rising to significant levels, more and more models will become depend their success from the outcome of their plug-in versions.

Interestingly, two BEVs showed up on the Top 5, and they are not named Tesla or Nissan, the Renault Zoe was Fourth, with a record 113 deliveries, while Hyundai finally decided to launch the Hyundai Ioniq Electric for real, with the Korean surging to 94 units last month, a new best for the Korean.

Looking at the YTD models ranking, there were a few changes at the top, with the most important being the rise of the Kia Optima PHEV to Fourth Place, while on the other hand the BMW 330e (51 units, worst result since January) stumbled three positions, to Seventh.

The Renault Zoe also profited from a record performance and climbed to #5, its best standing in Sweden.

The BMW i3 had its best result in 10 months, registering 74 units and climbing to #10, but the VW e-Golf did even better, registering 77 units, its best result in over two years, climbing to #18 (And doubling sales if its PHEV cousin, the GTE), while a few positions below, the #21 Mini Countryman PHEV continues to rise, scoring 51 units (New personal best), promising to climb even higher in the next few months.

Other model on the rise is the Porsche Panamera PHEV, now in #26.

On the EV manufacturers ranking, the leader Volkswagen (28%) has to thank the Passat GTE for pulling the weight, with Mitsubishi (13%, down 1%) and BMW (13%) both running for Second Place.
