VW e-Golf running for Bronze

October had 834 registrations, down 44% regarding the same period last year, this drop is due to the PHEV sales rush originated by the end of incentives for that class of vehicles, if we look only at BEVs, sales are up a staggering 213% YoY, helping the BEV share to be at 1.7%, which is the bulk of the current 1.9% PEV market share. 

With Tesla in an off-peak month, it was time for the VW e-Golf to shine and win the Monthy Best Seller award, thanks to a record 184 registrations, being only the second time in the VW BEV career to win such trophy, with the fist having been in May 2016.

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric was Second, with 126 deliveries, a new record for the Korean, no doubt profiting from the extended production output, while the BMW i3 (98 units, year best) and the Tesla models made up for the remaining Top 5.

Looking at the YTD ranking, there weren't many significant changes at the top, with the most relevant news being the VW e-Golf surpassing the Nissan Leaf and reaching Sixth Place, with the German model still having a shot at Third Place and winning the Best Selling regular-priced (<40.000 €) BEV trophy. Should be an entertaining race to see...

Another two BEVs are climbing the ranking stairs, with the Rookie of the Year Opel Ampera-e climbing to #9 (Record 46 deliveries in October), while the Smart ForFour ED is now #15.

On the Best Selling PHEVs side, the Porsche Panamera PHEV was last month Best Seller, with 14 units,  and with potential to win the Best Selling PHEV award this year.

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla is head and shoulders above the competition (34%, down 2%), while in Second Place we have BMW (11%, down 1%) losing ground to Hyundai (Also 11%), with both players separated by little more than 100 units, while Volkswagen (10%, up 2%) and Renault (9%) are on the lookout for a chance to join the podium.

If we add regular hybrids to plug-ins, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid recovered the leadership from the Kia Niro in October, with 471 units, with only one plug-in (VW e-Golf) making the ranking, as this was an off-peak month for Tesla.

Looking at the Jan.- Oct. 2017 sales data, the Tesla Model S is Fourth, behind the usual BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class, but also behind the successful Volvo S/V90 flagships.

Despite having arrived four years ago to these shores, the Model S is still growing (+7%) regarding 2016, but to seriously try to displace the 5-Series from the leadership, the Tesla model would need a lower entry price level (Model S 70, anyone?), so it could reach a larger audience.

With Tesla still deep in the Model 3 production-hell, it would be interesting, especially for export markets, to have a really appealing entry level version for the Model S, that would be able to catch some of the most impatient and cash-strapped Model 3 reservation owners.

Looking at yearly numbers, big SUV's had a big hit with the end of PHEV incentives, to the benefit of the Tesla Model X, which now has the big advantage of being the only model eligible to plug-in incentives, with the American Sports SUV selling in a much higher level than the rest of the competition.

In fact, when it comes to Premium SUV's, if we include the class below (Midsize), the Best Selling midsize SUV model is the Volvo XC60, with 1.925 units, but Tesla's SUV is #2, or Third best selling Premium SUV, all sizes added, with the Best Selling model being the much cheaper BMW X1, with 2.258 deliveries.

The Model X is winning big with the new Dutch fiscal system.
